Japan's DPP 'Kingmaker' Tamaki Suspended Over Admitted Affair; Furukawa Named Acting Leader
Dec 4, 2024, 03:59 AM
Yuichiro Tamaki, leader of Japan's Democratic Party for the People and a key 'kingmaker' in the minority government, has been suspended from his party position for three months following revelations of an admitted extramarital affair. The decision was made on December 4 during a meeting of party members, after a weekly magazine reported last month that Tamaki had been meeting with a female celebrity at a hotel. Tamaki admitted that the report was largely accurate and apologized to his supporters. During his suspension, Motohisa Furukawa, the party's chairman of the Diet Affairs Committee, will serve as acting leader.
