Instagram to Launch Edits App on March 15 Amid TikTok and CapCut Ban; Available on Android and iOS

Meta Platforms Inc.'s Instagram has announced a new video editing app called Edits, set to launch on March 15 and available on both Android and iOS devices. Edits aims to provide users with a comprehensive suite of creative tools for mobile video creation. The unveiling coincides with the temporary ban of TikTok and its sister app CapCut in the United States due to a federal 'divest-or-ban' law. While TikTok has since restored its services, CapCut, used by millions to create short videos, remains unavailable. Edits appears to be a direct competitor to CapCut, offering similar video editing functionalities. Instagram Head Adam Mosseri stated that Edits hopes "not just to be an editing tool but an entire full suite of creative tools for those of you who are passionate about making videos on your phone." The move reflects Meta's strategy to capitalize on the absence of key competitors in the short-form video space, similar to when it launched Reels after TikTok was banned in India in 2020.
