Brazilian journalist and sportscaster Léo Batista passed away at the age of 92 on January 19, 2025, in Rio de Janeiro due to complications from pancreatic cancer. Batista had been hospitalized since January 6 at Hospital Rios d'Or with dehydration and abdominal pain and was diagnosed with a pancreatic tumor. A pioneer in sports journalism, his career spanned over 76 years, making him one of the most iconic voices in Brazilian broadcasting. A longtime employee of TV Globo with a lifetime contract, Batista was known for his distinctive voice and contributions to sports coverage in Brazil. He covered numerous FIFA World Cups and Olympic Games, and was the first to narrate Formula 1 and surfing on Brazilian television. Early in his career at Radio Globo, he announced the death of President Getúlio Vargas in 1954.
