26-Year-Old Luigi Mangione Charged with Murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson
Dec 9, 2024, 07:52 PM
Authorities have arrested 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City last week. Thompson, 50, was gunned down outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel on December 4. Mangione, a University of Pennsylvania graduate and former Ivy League student, was apprehended on Monday at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being recognized by an employee. He was found in possession of a firearm that appeared to be a "ghost gun" possibly made with a 3D printer, as well as a silencer and false identification documents. Mangione is described as an anti-capitalist who had shared online quotes from Ted Kaczynski—the "Unabomber"—expressing disdain for the medical community, reportedly due to his resentment over how it treated a sick relative. Manhattan prosecutors have filed second-degree murder charges against him, along with multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon and possession of forged documents. He was arraigned in Blair County Courthouse in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, and is expected to be extradited to New York to face trial.
