As part of its '12 Days of OpenAI' initiative, OpenAI has launched a new feature allowing users to interact with its chatbot, ChatGPT, via traditional phone calls and WhatsApp messages. In the United States, users can call 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) to speak with ChatGPT for up to 15 minutes of free access per month, without the need for an account or internet connection. Globally, users can send messages to ChatGPT on WhatsApp using the same number. This development aims to expand accessibility and reach non-technical users, including the elderly and visually impaired. The service is built on OpenAI's Realtime API and utilizes the GPT-4o mini model with a knowledge cutoff of October 2023.
