President Donald Trump has terminated the government-funded security detail provided to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The security detail, which was being funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and reportedly cost taxpayers $15 million, was canceled Thursday night, according to sources familiar with the matter. Dr. Fauci has since hired his own private security, which he will pay for himself. When asked about the decision, President Trump stated that individuals like Dr. Fauci and former National Security Advisor John Bolton, whose security details have also been revoked, 'have made a lot of money' and can 'hire their own security.' Trump added, 'You can't have a security detail for the rest of your life because you work for government.' Dr. Fauci had been receiving threats since the COVID-19 pandemic began, leading to the provision of a government-funded security detail. The termination of the security details for Fauci, Bolton, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo comes as part of the administration's reassessment of ongoing security arrangements for former officials.
