Perry, Donkey Model for 'Shrek,' Dies at 30 in Palo Alto's Bol Park
Jan 4, 2025, 10:06 PM
Perry, a miniature donkey who inspired the character Donkey in the 2001 animated film 'Shrek,' has passed away at the age of 30. Born in 1994, Perry lived in Bol Park, Palo Alto, California, since 1997 and was a beloved member of the local community. He suffered from laminitis, a painful hoof disease, Cushing syndrome, and other health issues, which led to his euthanasia. Perry's playful and feisty personality endeared him to visitors and handlers alike. He was used as a model for animators from Pacific Data Images working on 'Shrek,' with his physical traits and movements influencing the design of the character voiced by Eddie Murphy. Despite his connection to the successful franchise, Perry's contribution was minimally compensated, with the park receiving only $75. The City of Palo Alto contributed $10,000 to his medical care. A memorial service is planned to honor his legacy.
