Kenya Deploys 217 Officers to Haiti, Total Deployment Exceeds 600 Amid Gang Violence
Jan 18, 2025, 05:27 PM
Kenya has deployed an additional 217 police officers to Haiti as part of the United Nations-backed Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) aimed at combating gang violence in the Caribbean nation. This second contingent follows the deployment of 400 officers last year, bringing the total number of Kenyan police officers in Haiti to over 600. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen oversaw the departure of the officers, emphasizing Kenya's commitment to the mission. The Kenya-led initiative has reportedly made progress in reducing gang violence, which has displaced over 700,000 Haitians and caused over 5,600 deaths in 2024. Kenya's President William Ruto has pledged to deploy a total of 1,000 personnel to Haiti. The mission has received international recognition for its efforts to restore stability in the region.
