Chair Lift Collapse at Spain's Astún Ski Resort Injures 30, Traps 80 in Pyrenees

At least 30 people have been injured, including nine in critical condition, after a chair lift collapsed at the Astún ski resort in the Pyrenees mountains near the French border in Huesca, Spain, on January 18, 2025. The accident occurred when a mechanical failure, possibly due to a cable snapping, caused the chair lift to detach, sending skiers falling from a height of up to 15 meters. Approximately 80 people remained trapped on the lift and were being rescued by emergency services. A woman was airlifted to Miguel Servet Hospital. Emergency services, including helicopters, are on site to treat and transport the injured. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his concern and offered support after speaking with the President of Aragón, Jorge Azcón. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
