OpenAI has expanded access to its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, by introducing interaction via phone calls and WhatsApp messages. In the United States, users can now call 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) to speak with the AI assistant, with a limit of 15 minutes of free calls per month and no account required. Globally, users can send WhatsApp messages to the same number to chat with ChatGPT, making it accessible everywhere the chatbot is available. This initiative, part of Day 10 of OpenAI's '12 Days of OpenAI' announcements, aims to make the AI assistant more accessible across various communication mediums, including landlines. The phone service is powered by OpenAI's Realtime API, while the WhatsApp feature utilizes the GPT-4o mini model. OpenAI notes that this is an experimental feature, and availability and limits may change.
