Chattogram Court Denies Bail to Hindu Monk Chinmoy Das on Sedition Charges
Jan 2, 2025, 06:18 AM
A court in Chattogram, Bangladesh, has rejected the bail plea of Hindu monk and former ISKCON leader, Chinmoy Krishna Das, who was arrested on sedition charges on November 25, 2024, at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The hearing, presided over by Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Saiful Islam, was held under tight security. Despite representation by a team of 11 lawyers, including Supreme Court advocates, the bail application was denied. Das has been in jail for over a month, and his legal team is now preparing to appeal to the High Court. ISKCON Vice President Radha Raman Das expressed disappointment, stating, 'It's very sad news. We know that the entire world was keeping an eye on this. We have to see the detailed order to find out why the bail was rejected.' The sedition charges carry a potential life imprisonment penalty.
