Mayor Breed Appoints Former Bloomberg Staffer Stephen Sherrill to District 2 Seat Amid Controversy
Dec 18, 2024, 05:57 PM
San Francisco Mayor London Breed has appointed Stephen Sherrill, a former staffer with ties to Michael Bloomberg, to fill the District 2 seat on the Board of Supervisors following Catherine Stefani's resignation to join the state Assembly. Sherrill, a native New Yorker and Presidio Heights resident, has been working in the Mayor's Office of Innovation since 2022 and became its director in April of this year. The Mayor's Office of Innovation is funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies. His appointment has sparked controversy among District 2 community leaders, who question the political motivations behind the choice, given Sherrill's connections to Bloomberg, a major donor to Breed's campaign. Sherrill, who registered as a Democrat in 2023 after previously identifying as 'no party preference', has promised to advocate for housing, transit, and infrastructure improvements in San Francisco.
