Greenland PM Múte Egede Rejects U.S. Control, Seeks Sovereignty Amid Trump's Interest

Greenland's Prime Minister Múte Egede has firmly rejected any notion of the Arctic island becoming part of the United States, following renewed interest from President Donald Trump in acquiring control of the territory. Egede emphasized Greenland's autonomy and desire to determine its own future, stating, 'We don’t want to be Americans. We don’t want to be Danish.' Despite this, he expressed openness to continued cooperation with the U.S., particularly in military and security matters. Egede's comments come in response to Trump's assertion that Greenland would be beneficial for U.S. national security. Meanwhile, Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen has also weighed in, asserting that no country should be able to simply take another country, in reaction to Trump's remarks about Greenland. Additionally, a Greenlandic lawmaker suggested starting formal talks with Denmark about establishing Greenland as a sovereign state, highlighting the island's potential to manage independently.
