Amazon Canada to Close All Quebec Warehouses, Lay Off 1,700 Permanent and 250 Temporary Workers Amid Laval Union Dispute
Jan 22, 2025, 04:08 PM
Amazon Canada has announced the closure of all seven of its warehouses in Quebec, resulting in the layoff of 1,700 permanent employees and 250 temporary workers over the next two months, eliminating a total of 1,900 jobs. The decision comes amid strained labor relations with unionized employees at the company's warehouse in Laval, Quebec, a Montreal suburb. Amazon had previously opposed the workers' accreditation with the Confederation of National Trade Unions but lost its challenge at the province's labor tribunal in October. The company stated that the closures are not in response to the unionization drive and plans to revert to a business model used in Quebec until 2020, which relied on third-party companies for package delivery. Amazon spokesperson Barbara Agrait emphasized that the decision was made following a review of Quebec operations and aims to provide cost savings and efficient service to customers through the third-party model.
