Trump Insists on Acquiring Greenland, Citing 57,000 Residents' Desire and Free World Protection
Jan 26, 2025, 07:45 AM
U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his interest in acquiring Greenland, asserting that the island's 57,000 residents want to be part of the United States. In a conversation with reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump emphasized that gaining control of Greenland is crucial for the protection of the free world, stating that the U.S. is the only entity capable of ensuring its freedom. He suggested that Denmark's refusal to allow this would be an unfriendly act. Trump's comments follow a contentious phone call with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, during which he demanded the purchase of Greenland. Frederiksen has maintained that Greenland is not for sale and belongs to its people. Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede has also expressed a desire for closer cooperation with the U.S. on defense and mining, despite asserting that the island's future is a matter for Greenlanders to decide.
