Impeached South Korean President Yoon Arrested in Second Attempt Over Martial Law
Jan 15, 2025, 01:46 AM
South Korean authorities have arrested impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over insurrection charges related to his December 3 martial law declaration. In their second attempt since January 3, investigators and over 2,000 police officers arrived at his official residence in Seoul, facing resistance from his guards and over 6,500 protesters and lawmakers supporting Yoon. After clashes and using ladders to breach the compound, investigators entered the residence. Yoon eventually agreed to surrender to avoid bloodshed and was detained by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, marking the first time a sitting South Korean president has been arrested.
