Romania Annuls Election Won by Pro-Russian Calin Georgescu Over Alleged Russian Interference
Dec 6, 2024, 01:22 PM
Romania's Constitutional Court has annulled the results of the first round of the country's presidential election, which was held on November 24, ordering the entire electoral process to be rerun. The decision was made on Friday after declassified intelligence documents revealed alleged Russian interference in the election through a coordinated online campaign, particularly via TikTok. Calin Georgescu, an independent candidate described as pro-Russian and far-right, won the first round with 22.94% of the votes. The second round of the election was scheduled to take place on Sunday. The court's ruling requires the government to set a new date for the presidential election.
