Ukrainian Drone Attack on Kazan Aircraft Plant in Tatarstan Causes Fire, No Damage Reported
Jan 20, 2025, 06:35 AM
A fire erupted in Kazan, the capital of Russia's Tatarstan republic, following a Ukrainian drone attack on Jan. 20, 2025. The attack targeted the Kazan Gorbunov Aircraft Plant, a significant facility involved in the production and repair of Tu-160 and Tu-22M3 bombers, as well as the Borisoglebskoye airfield, located over 900 km from the Ukrainian border. The drones also struck a fuel tank at the aircraft plant, which has been under EU sanctions since 2023. Russian Telegram channels reported multiple explosions around 5:30 a.m. local time, with videos showing a large blaze. The Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsiya, suspended flights at Kazan International Airport and other nearby airports in response to the attack. According to Tatarstan's press service, all drones were intercepted, and no casualties or damage were reported, though independent verification of these claims remains unavailable.
