A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck southern Taiwan early Tuesday, centered near Chiayi County, about 80 km from Tainan City. According to Taiwan's Central Weather Administration, the quake occurred at 12:17 a.m. local time with a depth of 14 kilometers. The earthquake caused buildings to collapse in Tainan City, where six people were rescued from damaged structures, including a child in Nanxi district. At least 44 people were reported injured, according to local authorities. The quake triggered over 50 aftershocks and was felt as far as Taipei.
