6.4-Magnitude Quake Strikes Southern Taiwan, Injuring 44; Six Rescued, Over 50 Aftershocks Reported

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck southern Taiwan early Tuesday, centered near Chiayi County, about 80 km from Tainan City. According to Taiwan's Central Weather Administration, the quake occurred at 12:17 a.m. local time with a depth of 14 kilometers. The earthquake caused buildings to collapse in Tainan City, where six people were rescued from damaged structures, including a child in Nanxi district. At least 44 people were reported injured, according to local authorities. The quake triggered over 50 aftershocks and was felt as far as Taipei. Landslides caused road blockages in Taitung and Kaohsiung counties, with some homes experiencing ceiling collapses. Despite the damages, essential services such as electricity and water remained largely unaffected.
