Biden Transfers 11 Yemeni Guantanamo Detainees to Oman to Start New Lives
Jan 6, 2025, 09:53 PM
The Biden administration has transferred 11 Yemeni detainees from the Guantanamo Bay detention center to Oman to start new lives, reducing the prisoner population at the facility to just 15 individuals. The Pentagon announced the move in a statement, marking one of the largest resettlements of Guantanamo prisoners in years. Among those released is Moath al-Alwi, an artist known for his sculptures made from found objects within the prison. The detainees were captured in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. The transfer comes just days before President Biden is set to leave office.
