Jack Smith Resigns After Leading Two Trump Investigations, Dismisses Political Interference Claims
Jan 15, 2025, 11:11 AM
Special Counsel Jack Smith, who led two federal criminal investigations against former President Donald Trump, resigned on January 10 ahead of Trump's inauguration as president-elect. The investigations focused on allegations that Trump attempted to overturn the 2020 presidential election results and mishandled classified documents. Smith's final report, released after his resignation, detailed why he did not charge Trump with incitement of insurrection under 18 USC 2383, citing insufficient evidence to prove that the January 6 Capitol riot constituted an insurrection or that Trump incited it. Despite this, Smith expressed confidence that Trump could have been convicted on other charges had he not won the election. The report also dismissed claims of political interference in the prosecution as 'laughable.'
