The filings reveal that Smith separated from the Department on January 10, 2025, after submitting his confidential final report on January 7. Appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022, Smith led investigations into Trump's handling of classified documents and alleged interference in the 2020 election, both of which concluded without successful prosecutions.
