8-Year-Old Maine Coon Cat Mittens Makes Three Unintended Flights, Reunited with Owner After Air New Zealand Error

Mittens, an 8-year-old Maine Coon cat, inadvertently became a frequent flyer after being left in the cargo hold of a plane. The cat, owned by Margo Neas, was supposed to travel from Christchurch, New Zealand, to Melbourne, Australia, on January 13. However, after a three-hour wait at Melbourne Airport, Neas was informed that Mittens had been returned to New Zealand on the same flight. The cat made three trips between the two countries within 24 hours, totaling about 7.5 hours in the air. The Air New Zealand pilot was informed of the extra passenger during the flight and turned on the heating in the cargo hold to keep Mittens comfortable. A stowed wheelchair had obscured a baggage handler's view of Mittens' cage. The pet moving company that Neas used to arrange Mittens' travel met the cat on her return to Christchurch and ensured she was back on the plane for another trip to Melbourne, this time one way. Mittens was eventually reunited with Neas in Melbourne, having lost weight but otherwise unharmed. She ran into Neas' arms and gave the biggest cuddles. Air New Zealand apologized for the incident and committed to reimbursing all costs associated with Mittens' travel. The airline also stated they would work with their ground handler in Melbourne to prevent future occurrences, according to spokesperson Alisha Armstrong. Mittens, not usually an affectionate pet, is now the cuddliest she's ever been, receiving as much attention as she wants due to the relief of being back with her owner.
