South Korean Opposition Seeks to Impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo Over Judge Appointments
Dec 26, 2024, 05:39 AM
South Korea's main opposition Democratic Party has submitted an impeachment motion against Acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo on December 26, escalating a constitutional crisis. The move follows Han's refusal to appoint three Constitutional Court judge nominees—Ma Eun-hyuk, Jeong Gye-seon, and Cho Han-chang—arguing that appointing judges is the president's prerogative and should be delayed until there is agreement between parties. The opposition contends that Han's refusal is hindering the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached earlier this month over his declaration of martial law. The Democratic Party plans to hold a vote on the impeachment motion on December 27.
