Award-Winning British Actress Dame Joan Plowright Dies at 95
Jan 17, 2025, 11:48 AM
Dame Joan Plowright, the award-winning British actress and widow of Laurence Olivier, has died on Thursday at the age of 95, her family announced. Plowright enjoyed a long and illustrious career spanning over seven decades across theatre, film, and television until blindness led to her retirement. She won a Tony Award, two Golden Globes—being among the few actresses to win two in the same year—and was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in "Enchanted April." Her notable film credits include "Enchanted April," "Tea with Mussolini," "Dennis the Menace," and "101 Dalmatians." In a statement, her family said, “We are so proud of all Joan did and who she was as a loving and deeply inclusive human being.” In honor of her legacy, theaters across London's West End will dim their lights for two minutes at 7 p.m. on January 21, as announced by the Society of London Theatre.
