The Financial Times has uncovered records indicating that between 2018 and 2019, the Syrian regime, led by Bashar al-Assad, sent approximately $250 million in cash to Moscow. The funds, comprising $100 bills and €500 notes, were transported in 21 shipments to sanctioned Russian banks. This financial transfer occurred during a period when Assad's regime was facing a severe shortage of foreign currency, and the Syrian president was indebted to Russia for military support. The cash was flown into Moscow's Vnukovo airport, highlighting the regime's efforts to secure its financial assets amidst international sanctions. During this time, Assad's family also acquired luxury properties in Russia.
