Canada Adds Ansarallah (Houthis) to Terrorist List Under Criminal Code
Dec 2, 2024, 08:44 PM
Canada has designated Ansarallah, also known as Ansar Allah and better known as the Iran-backed Houthi militant group in Yemen, as a terrorist entity under the Criminal Code, Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc announced on Monday. The designation means Ansarallah has met the definition of a 'terrorist group' under Canadian law, which prohibits certain actions related to terrorist groups, including financing and recruitment. The move allows Canadian banks to freeze any assets the group may have in Canada and permits police to charge anyone who supports them financially or materially. This action aligns Canada with allies such as the United States, which previously listed the Houthis as a terrorist organization, and aims to counter the global security threats posed by the group's destabilizing activities.
