Trump DHS, Led by Benjamine Huffman, Repeals ICE Limits and Reviews Parole for 1.5 Million Migrants

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under President Donald Trump has issued memos to repeal restrictions on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents that were previously set by former DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. These restrictions, outlined in a 2021 memo, designated certain areas such as schools, universities, healthcare facilities, places of worship, and social service establishments as 'protected areas' where ICE enforcement actions were limited. The new memos, announced by Acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman, rescind these limitations, allowing ICE agents to use 'common sense' in determining where to conduct enforcement operations. Additionally, the DHS has ordered a review of the use of humanitarian parole, which was broadly utilized by the Biden administration to admit 1.5 million migrants. The review aims to ensure that parole is used on a 'case-by-case basis' as per statutory requirements, following criticism that it was abused by the previous administration.
