U.S. Bans Chinese, Russian Tech in Connected Vehicles for Models 2027 and 2030 Over Security Concerns
Jan 14, 2025, 11:47 AM
The Biden administration has finalized a rule that bans the import and sale of connected vehicles in the U.S. that contain hardware or software with a 'sufficient nexus' to China or Russia, citing national security concerns. The Department of Commerce announced that the rule, which will apply to passenger vehicles, prohibits the use of Chinese and Russian technology in the Vehicle Connectivity System (VCS) and Automated Driving System (ADS). The software bans will take effect for Model 2027 cars, while hardware restrictions will be implemented for Model 2030 vehicles. This move is part of a broader effort to safeguard U.S. national security and protect Americans' privacy from potential manipulation by foreign adversaries. The rulemaking process identified that technologies from China and Russia pose an undue risk to national security, with Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo emphasizing the advanced technological capabilities of modern vehicles, including cameras, microphones, and GPS tracking, which are connected to the internet.
