Russia's New Year Drone Attack on Kyiv Kills Two, Injures Six Including Pregnant Women
Jan 1, 2025, 12:40 PM
Russia launched a drone attack on Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, early on New Year's Day, resulting in the deaths of two people and injuries to at least six others, including two pregnant women. The strike damaged buildings in two districts of the city, including a six-story residential building in the Pecherskyi district and a non-residential building in the Sviatoshynskyi district. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack, stating that even on New Year's Eve, Russia was focused on causing harm to Ukraine. Ukraine's air defenses managed to shoot down 63 out of the 111 drones launched by Russia, with an additional 46 drones being downed by electronic jamming. The attack also affected other regions of Ukraine, including Poltava, Sumy, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Zaporizhzhia, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, Kirovohrad, and Mykolaiv, where local infrastructure was damaged.
