Trump Orders U.S. Flags at Full-Staff for Inauguration Day, Overrides Mourning for Carter
Jan 20, 2025, 05:56 PM
President Donald Trump, on his inauguration day, issued an executive order mandating that the U.S. flag be flown at full-staff on all future Inauguration Days. This order came into effect immediately, superseding the previous directive to keep flags at half-staff for 30 days following the death of former President Jimmy Carter. The White House flag, which had been at half-staff in honor of Carter, was raised to full-staff shortly after Trump's swearing-in ceremony. Trump's order specifies that flags will return to half-staff on the following day to continue honoring Carter for the remainder of the 30-day mourning period. Governors from at least 28 states, along with House Speaker Mike Johnson, had already directed flags to be flown at full-staff for the inauguration, aligning with Trump's directive.
