Council of Europe Lowers Wolf Protection Under Bern Convention Amid Farmers' Relief, Environmentalists' Alarm

On December 3, 2024, the Council of Europe approved a proposal in Strasbourg to downgrade the protection status of wolves under the 1979 Bern Convention, moving the species from 'strictly protected' to 'protected'. This decision allows European countries greater flexibility in managing wolf populations, including making it easier to cull wolves that threaten livestock. Farmers across Europe have welcomed the move, expressing relief as they face increasing attacks on livestock due to rising wolf numbers. However, environmental groups and scientists warn that the decision, which they argue is not based on science, could harm wolf populations and biodiversity. The change may also pave the way for adjustments in the protection status of other species. Notably, Britain opposed the proposal.
