Trump Re-designates Iran-backed Houthis as Terrorist Organization, Reversing Biden's 2021 Decision
Jan 22, 2025, 11:40 PM
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order re-designating Yemen's Houthi movement, known as Ansar Allah, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO), reversing the Biden administration's 2021 decision to remove the group from the list. The White House announced that the Houthis' activities threaten the security of American civilians and personnel in the Middle East, as well as the safety of regional partners. Backed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Houthis have attacked U.S. Navy warships dozens of times, engaged in assaults on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, and have launched missiles and drones towards Israeli cities since October 2023. The group's official slogan is 'Death to America, Death to Israel, Curse be upon the Jews, Victory to Islam.' The designation aims to eliminate the group's capabilities, deprive them of resources, and end their attacks.
