Trump Halts Most U.S. Foreign Aid for 90 Days; Israel, Egypt Exempted
Jan 24, 2025, 08:46 PM
President Donald Trump's administration has ordered an immediate 90-day suspension of most U.S. foreign aid programs pending a review into their alignment with the President's policies, according to a State Department memo. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued the directive, which affects both new and existing assistance and includes immediate 'stop-work' orders for ongoing grants and contracts. Waivers have been granted for military financing to Israel and Egypt, allowing aid to those countries to continue. Humanitarian food programs are also excepted from the freeze. The pause appears to impact aid to key allies such as Ukraine, Jordan, and Taiwan, though it remains unclear how existing commitments will be handled.
