South Korea's Opposition Impeaches Acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo Amid Constitutional Crisis
Dec 27, 2024, 07:47 AM
South Korea's opposition-controlled parliament has unanimously voted to impeach acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, deepening the country's constitutional crisis. The impeachment follows Han's refusal to appoint three Constitutional Court judges needed to proceed with the impeachment of suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office earlier this month after declaring martial law. Han was found to have 'actively participated in the insurrection.' This marks the first time an acting president has been impeached in South Korea, and it comes just two weeks after President Yoon's suspension, leaving Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok to become the new acting president.
