U.S. and Mexican Authorities Discover Sophisticated 40-Meter Smuggling Tunnel Between Ciudad Juárez and El Paso

U.S. and Mexican law enforcement agencies have discovered a sophisticated underground tunnel running from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, to El Paso, Texas. The tunnel, approximately 40 meters long, 6 feet tall, and 4 feet wide, was equipped with lighting, ventilation, and wood supports. It was found near Gate 28 of the border wall on Jan. 9, after the removal of a metal plate covering a 36-by-36-inch entry hole. The tunnel, hidden under the bed of the Rio Grande, is believed to have been used for smuggling migrants, drugs, and other illicit goods. The discovery was made during a joint operation involving multiple agencies from both countries, including the FBI, U.S. Border Patrol, and various Mexican security forces. Authorities have promised to investigate further and find those responsible for the tunnel's construction.
