Riots and Protests Erupt in France After Right-Wing EU Election Victory Ahead of Snap Elections
Jun 15, 2024, 01:55 PM
Following a significant victory by right-wing parties in the European Union elections, France has witnessed widespread protests and riots. Far-left extremists and supporters of President Emmanuel Macron's centrist alliance have taken to the streets in cities including Paris, Marseille, Rennes, Bordeaux, Montpellier, and Besançon. Demonstrators have clashed with police, who have responded with tear gas. The protests, which have included anti-far-right chants and projectiles thrown at police, are in response to the right-wing's electoral success and are also a prelude to upcoming snap parliamentary elections announced by Macron. Thousands of protesters, including members of the Popular Front left-wing alliance, have united in opposition to the far-right National Rally party, led by Marine Le Pen, which made significant gains in the EU elections. Demonstrators reportedly chanted 'ACAB' and police have estimated 350,000 people were expected to participate.
