Jun 9, 2024, 06:08 PM
French President Emmanuel Macron’s group was decisively defeated by Marine Le Pen’s far-right party in the European Parliament elections on Sunday. Le Pen’s party secured between 32% and 34% of the vote, with 32.3% support according to some sources, while Macron’s group garnered only 14% to 16%, according to exit polls. This result marks a significant shift in the political landscape, with nationalist and far-right parties gaining ground across Europe. In Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition was routed by the conservative bloc, with the far-right AfD securing 16.5% of the vote, SPD 14%, and the Greens 12%. Spain's opposition conservatives also led in the EU vote, according to exit polls. Despite these gains, mainstream parties are still projected to hold the EU parliament.
