Trump Flips Texas Border Counties, Gains 46% Latino Support, Shifts AOC's District
Nov 9, 2024, 11:00 AM
In a historic shift, former President Donald Trump significantly increased his support among Hispanic and Latino voters in the 2024 presidential election, flipping several traditionally Democratic counties in Texas, including those along the border with Mexico. Trump's gains were particularly notable in the Rio Grande Valley, where he won 12 out of 14 border counties, a region that has been a Democratic stronghold for generations. This shift was driven by a substantial increase in support from Latino men, with Trump winning 55% of their vote according to exit polls. Nationally, Trump captured 46% of the Hispanic vote, marking a significant realignment in American politics. The swing towards Trump was also evident in areas like AOC's district, which saw a 24-point swing towards the Republican candidate. Statewide, 234 counties moved in Trump's direction, including key counties like Hidalgo and Cameron. Despite these gains, reactions among local Hispanic communities were mixed, with some expressing strong support while others remained critical.
