The United States and Niger have agreed to withdraw approximately 1,000 American troops from Niger by September 15, 2024. This decision follows a visit to Niamey by a U.S. military delegation and was confirmed by a joint communiqué from both nations. The withdrawal process will involve the evacuation of troops stationed at two bases, AB201 in Agadez and AB101 in Niamey. The U.S. Department of Defense and the Department of National Defense of the Republic of Niger issued a statement confirming the timeline. This move comes amid deteriorating relations between the two countries, with Niger's prime minister attributing the strain to U.S. actions. Additionally, the withdrawal is being facilitated by agreements to grant landing and overflight permits for C17 transport aircraft. President Biden announced the withdrawal ahead of the arrival of Russian forces, and it was demanded by Niger's military leadership.
