Washington D.C. has heightened its security measures as it prepares to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election, marking the fourth anniversary of the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack by supporters of then-President Donald Trump. On Monday, members of the House and Senate will convene to officially certify Trump's victory in the election. The event has been designated as a 'special security event' by Mayor Muriel Bowser, a first in modern U.S. history for an electoral certification, aimed at preventing a repeat of the 2021 assault. Over 1,500 individuals have been charged in connection with the 2021 riot, with more than 1,000 sentenced, including 650 who received prison terms. President-elect Trump has promised to consider pardons for those involved in the riot, adding a layer of tension to the proceedings.
