Canada's House of Commons Votes 320-2 to Investigate Foreign Interference
Jun 13, 2024, 08:11 PM
The Canadian House of Commons has overwhelmingly voted in favor of a motion to investigate allegations of foreign interference in Canada's democratic institutions. The motion, proposed by the Bloc Quebecois, passed with 320 votes in favor and only 2 against, with the Green Party's Elizabeth May and Mike Morrice being the dissenting votes. All parties except for the Greens supported the motion. Additionally, MPs across party lines have called on Justice Marie-Josée Hogue to investigate allegations that current and former parliamentarians have collaborated with hostile foreign governments. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh expressed alarm after reading an unredacted report on foreign interference by the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP), accusing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of inaction and criticizing Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre for his apparent disinterest in the issue. The House of Commons also gave final approval to a comprehensive bill aimed at combating foreign interference. The parliamentary ethics committee has also passed a motion to have cabinet minister Randy Boissonnault’s business associates testify in an extended meeting.
