7.1-Magnitude Earthquake Near Mount Everest Kills 95 in Tibet

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.8 magnitude struck Dingri County in the city of Xigaze in China's Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region at 9:05 a.m. Beijing Time on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake as magnitude 7.1. The earthquake resulted in the deaths of at least 95 people and injured 130 others, according to regional disaster relief headquarters and Chinese state media reports. Over 1,000 houses collapsed in Dingri County, with many buildings destroyed in the region. Tremors were felt in neighboring countries, including Nepal's capital Kathmandu, Bhutan, and parts of India. The earthquake shook the northern foothills of the Himalayas near Mount Everest, close to one of Tibet's holiest cities. Aftershocks continued to shake the region, complicating rescue efforts. The Dalai Lama expressed deep sadness over the loss of life.
