Global Coal Demand Hits Record 8.77B Tons in 2024, Continues Through 2027 as World's Hottest Year
Dec 18, 2024, 09:04 AM
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has reported that global coal consumption is projected to reach an all-time high in 2024, driven primarily by increased demand from China and India. The IEA's latest data indicates that coal demand will continue to set new records through at least 2027, overturning previous estimates that suggested a peak in 2023. In 2024, global coal demand is expected to hit 8.77 billion tons, with China’s usage rising by 1% and India's by 5%. Despite efforts by advanced economies to reduce coal consumption, the growth in emerging markets is expected to offset these declines. This year is also anticipated to be the hottest on record, further complicating the global energy landscape as reliance on coal persists amid rising electricity demands.
