Canada Orders TikTok to Shut Down Canadian Operations; App Access to Continue
Nov 7, 2024, 03:45 AM
Following a national security review under the Investment Canada Act, the Canadian government has ordered TikTok Technology Canada Inc., the Canadian subsidiary of Chinese-owned ByteDance, to wind up its operations. Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne cited concerns about national security risks linked to the company's connection with its parent firm. Despite the shutdown order, the government is not blocking access to the TikTok app, allowing Canadians to continue using the popular video-sharing platform. TikTok has responded by stating it will challenge the order in court, arguing that "shutting down TikTok's Canadian offices and destroying hundreds of well-paying local jobs is not in anyone's best interest."
