Finland-Germany C-Lion1 Undersea Cable Severed; Cause Unknown, Authorities Investigate
Nov 18, 2024, 04:59 PM
An undersea data cable connecting Finland and Germany, known as C-Lion1, has been severed near Öland, disrupting communication between the two countries. Finnish state-owned company Cinia reported that all data traffic on the cable, which runs from Helsinki to Rostock, is down. Authorities from both Finland and Germany are investigating the cause of the damage, which is currently unknown. The cable, stretching nearly 1,200 kilometers along the bottom of the Baltic Sea, is the first direct communications link between Finland and Central Europe. While possibilities such as anchoring or trawling have been suggested, deliberate disconnection has not been ruled out. Repair work has commenced and may take up to two weeks.
