Google Announces Major Updates to Combat Explicit Deepfake Porn, Reduces Exposure by 70%
Jul 31, 2024, 06:30 PM
Google has announced significant updates to its search algorithms and controls to combat the spread of explicit deepfake porn. The tech giant is rolling out new online safety features aimed at making it easier to remove non-consensual explicit deepfakes from search results and preventing them from appearing high in search rankings. These measures include changes to the search ranking system, site-wide demotions, and the introduction of a fact-check tool for image searches. Google reports that these changes have already reduced exposure to explicit image results by over 70%. The updates come in response to mounting scrutiny over Google's role in the proliferation of AI-generated deepfake content. Notably, 1 year ago, 44% of desktop traffic to Mrdeepfakes came from Google.
