Recent studies have revealed that a significant portion of young, healthy U.S. Marines are experiencing long COVID symptoms. According to a study published in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas, 24.7% of the Marines assessed developed post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC). The most prevalent symptoms reported were loss of taste or smell (41.6%), shortness of breath (37.6%), and cough (22.8%). These findings underscore the distinct and severe impact of COVID-19 compared to other respiratory infections, with additional burdens including neurological, cognitive, and fatigue symptoms. The high prevalence of long COVID among Marines, with 25% affected, poses significant challenges for their health and operational readiness.
