Canada Bans 324 Firearms, Considers Sending Confiscated Guns to Ukraine Amid Amnesty
Dec 5, 2024, 11:29 PM
Canada's Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc announced the addition of 324 assault-style firearms to the country's banned firearms list, effective immediately. These firearms can no longer be legally used, sold, or imported, and can only be transferred or transported under extremely limited circumstances. Legal gun owners will have an amnesty until October next year. The move follows the May 2020 ban of 1,500 makes and models of firearms, which has grown to over 2,000 as new variants have been identified. The federal government is also considering donating the confiscated firearms to Ukraine to support their fight against Russia. Defence Minister Bill Blair indicated that the Liberals’ gun buyback program could facilitate sending these firearms to Ukraine, stating, "Every bit of assistance we can offer to the Ukrainians is one step towards their victory." LeBlanc urged action on gun control to honour victims of mass shootings as the long-delayed federal buyback program begins.
